Storytelling Cubes Generate Fun Narrative Writing Prompts!

Coming up with story ideas can be difficult for young writers, but with storytelling cubes, students get exciting, randomised prompts to spark their thinking. Whether used for independent writing, small-group activities, or whole-class storytelling challenges, these storytelling cubes help students build confidence in coming up with unique story ideas.

Story Cubes Game – Roll & Write a Story

Make story telling exciting with our printable story cubes game dice! Designed to inspire fun creative writing prompts, this resource includes 12 different story game cubes for students to roll:

  • 4 Main Character Story Telling Cubes – Determines the main character of the story
  • 3 Villain Story Telling Cubes – Introduces an antagonist or obstacle
  • 3 Roll-a-Setting Story Cubes – Establishes where the story takes place
  • 3 Complication/Problem Cubes – Creates a challenge for the character to overcome

To make your story cubes, simply print, cut, and fold the cubes into shape, then roll each one to generate their unique story elements. Once students have a character, villain, setting, and problem, they can begin crafting an imaginative story. This activity works great as a writing center activity, morning warm-up, or as a collaborative storytelling activity!
