Subtraction Interactive Activity That Turns Students Into Maths Detectives

Teaching subtraction strategies can be even more effective when students are motivated by a strong theme and meaningful problem-solving tasks. This subtraction interactive activity transforms your maths lesson into a detective investigation, encouraging students to apply subtraction skills to reveal suspects and solve a classroom mystery.

Created as an engaging teaching presentation, the resource guides students through a sequence of subtraction investigations using a variety of strategies. Throughout the activity, students solve subtraction problems linked to real-world scenarios such as missing dogs, returned shop items and suspicious inventory records. Each correct answer helps students uncover clues and eliminate suspects as they work towards solving the crime.

Because the activity combines storytelling, visual prompts and interactive questioning, it helps maintain student focus while reinforcing important subtraction concepts. The detective theme also provides a fun and memorable context for practising mental computation and mathematical reasoning skills.

Creative Classroom Ideas for Teaching Subtraction Strategies

This subtraction strategies activity can be used in a variety of flexible and engaging ways throughout your maths block. The detective theme makes it easy to incorporate into both formal lessons and fun classroom challenges.

Some ideas for classroom use include:

  • Mystery maths warm-ups – Start each maths lesson by completing one investigation slide as a class to build subtraction fluency over time.
  • Escape-room style challenges – Hide subtraction clues around the classroom and have students solve each one before progressing to the next suspect.
  • Maths rotations – Use different investigation slides at small-group stations, with students recording evidence and answers in detective notebooks.
  • Partner investigations – Have students work collaboratively to explain their subtraction thinking and justify which strategy they used.

The scaffolded structure and highly engaging storyline make this resource suitable for reinforcing subtraction skills while encouraging mathematical discussion and participation.
