Number Facts Fluency Made Easy!

Are you looking for a way to motivate your students to build their subtraction fact fluency? If you are, you’re one of many educators searching for high-quality printable resources to help practise, assess, and track student mastery of subtraction facts! This year, we’re excited to help you grow your future mathematicians with a handy printable subtraction fact fluency program for early primary school students!

Subtraction Fact Timed Tests and Mastery Trackers

This printable resource download includes everything you need to create and implement a motivational maths fact fluency program in your classroom. With its variety of printables, you can easily set up a self-managed fact fluency practise program that includes independent practise opportunities, fact family timed tests, and mastery tracking datasheets. In your download, you will find:

  • Fact Family-Based Subtraction Fact Timed Tests – You will find three versions of a 2-minute timed test for each subtraction fact group, including – 0, -1, -2, -3, etc. Fact groups extend up to -12 facts.
  • Subtraction Fact Timed Test Answer Keys – A key is included for each assessment above.
  • Whole Class Subtraction Fact Trackers – We’ve included a single-sheet tracker for all facts/all students in your class and a tracker for each subtraction fact group.
  • Subtraction Fact Flash Cards – We have included a set of printable subtraction fact flashcards for students to use for independent practise.

To implement this program, we recommend the following:

  • Send home a parent letter introducing your plans and requirements/rewards for student participation and fact mastery.
  • Begin all students with the -0 Fact set and flashcards. Give students one week to practise their facts in class and at home.
  • At the end of the week, assess all students with a two-minute test. Students who pass the test will return their flashcards and move on to the next set, with the process continuing as levels are passed.
  • Store ready-to-go sets of flashcards (in zipper bags) in a labelled drawer system or envelope so that students can access them and get their new fact set independently.
