Developing a strong foundation of ten is vital for students’ success in maths. When they can partition numbers into tens, they can better manipulate numbers mentally. That’s where ten frames come in handy! They help students develop a visual image for each number using the benchmark numbers 5 and 10.

Use this resource in a variety of ways in the mathematics classroom. Print the page(s) on coloured cardboard and use it with coloured counters.

Why Use a Tens Frame in the Classroom

Using a tens frame in mathematical instruction offers several significant benefits, particularly for young learners. A tens frame, a simple two-by-five grid, visually represents numbers up to ten, making abstract concepts more concrete. It helps students build number sense, understand place value, and develop mental math strategies by showing quantities and relationships between numbers clearly. Tens frames facilitate addition and subtraction by providing a visual aid to see how numbers combine to make ten or how they break down from ten. This tool also supports differentiated learning, catering to students at various levels by allowing for hands-on and interactive learning experiences. Overall, tens frames enhance engagement and understanding, laying a strong foundation for more advanced mathematical skills.

This resource can be used to reinforce:

  • the understanding of numbers 0–20
  • the understanding that the teen numbers are composed of a ten and ‘some’ ones
  • modelling the action of joining and separating to represent addition and subtraction
  • basic fact strategies for addition and subtraction.
