Budget Planning Project for Real-World Maths Learning
Learning how to manage money is an important life skill, and budgeting projects provide meaningful opportunities for students to apply mathematics in authentic contexts. By working with a budget, students develop problem-solving skills while seeing how maths is used in everyday decision-making.
This budget planning project places students in charge of creating a stall for a school fair. Students choose decorations, food, activities and prizes, solve money-based word problems and calculate costs using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They then use a set budget to plan their stall, make adjustments where necessary and reflect on the decisions they made throughout the project.
The project encourages critical and creative thinking while reinforcing key number concepts. As students evaluate costs and prioritise purchases, they build confidence applying maths skills in a practical and engaging setting.
Budgeting Activities for Flexible Classroom Use
These budgeting activities can be used in a variety of teaching contexts, including:
- Project-based learning – Have students complete the entire school fair budget challenge independently or in small groups.
- Financial literacy lessons – Use the project to introduce budgeting, spending decisions and money management skills.
- Maths enrichment – Encourage students to justify their choices, compare budgets and explain how they stayed within their spending limit.
Because students make their own decisions throughout the task, every completed project is unique.
