Explore the Language Features of Procedure Texts

Procedural texts inform how to do something through a series of steps.  To achieve this purpose, procedural texts use clear and direct language. Some examples of the language features of procedure texts include:

  • Common Nouns – People, places and things
  • Action Verbs – Doing words
  • Adverbs – Describe verbs
  • Adverbial Phrases – Tell when, where or how

This resource has been designed by our expert teacher team to help your students identify these key language features within the context of a procedure text. Students are required to read each text, then color-code it according to the language features used. The language features focused on in this resource are action verbs, adverbs and adverbial phrases.

The procedural texts included in this resource are:

  • How to Build a Worm Farm
  • How to Make a Balloon Rocket
  • How to Make Spaghetti

Suggested answers for teachers are also provided.

Support All Learners With This Procedural Writing Worksheet

We understand that there is a huge range of diverse learning abilities in any classroom and that catering to every child’s needs is never easy! Here are some suggestions for catering to both above- and below-level learners while implementing this resource:

Pre-Teach the Lingo

Before working on the worksheets, pre-teach (or re-teach) key vocabulary with your students. Students will need to have a firm understanding of what verbs, adverbs and adverbial phrases are before attempting the worksheets. Should some students need a reminder, refer them to your classroom grammar display for assistance.

Create Your Own

Challenge fast finishers or students requiring an extension to create their own procedure, ensuring it includes the language features of procedure texts featured in the worksheet examples. Have them choose certain elements to be color-coded. Once complete, have students swap their texts to be color-coded by a partner.
