If ‘Ironic’ Were Written by Teachers Instead of Alanis Morissette

Alanis Morissette may not be a teacher, but the singer has taught us all a thing or two about rocking out over the years. So we wondered, what if the most famous song from the rocker who gave us all permission to rage when we need to was rewritten by a few teachers? Would it be … Ironic? Oh yes, we really do think it would be!

We suggest taking a listen to Ironic before reading, so you have the melody in your head! But we must warn you: You may be singing the teacher’s version of Ironic in the teacher’s lounge from now on!

‘Ironic’ If It Were Written By a Teacher

A young teacher, feels 98
She won the lottery, spent it at Target the next day
It’s a professional development day when you’re already free
Planning period when the kids have an assembly
And isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?

It’s like raiiiiin when you needed their recess to prep
It’s winter break when your class gave you strep
It’s the free supplies that you just didn’t take
And who would have thought, it figures?

Mr. Value All Kids hated the state test
Prepped to proctor, got plenty of rest
He waited his whole darn year for one day of stress
And as the fire alarm rang, he thought
Well isn’t this nice?
And isn’t it ironic … don’t you think?

It’s like raiiiiin when you needed their recess to prep
It’s winter break when your class gave you strep
It’s the free supplies that you just didn’t take
And who would have thought, it figures?

School has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything’s OK, and everything’s going right
And school has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything’s gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

A snow day when you’d lined up a sub
No after-school when you’d canceled the club
It’s like ten thousand crayons when all you need is a pen
It’s finding the perfect activity
And then realizing all your copies are spent
And isn’t it ironic…don’t you think
A little too ironic…and, yeah, I really do think…

It’s like raiiiiin when you needed their recess to prep
It’s winter break when your class gave you strep
It’s the free supplies that you just didn’t take
And who would have thought, it figures?

School has a funny way of sneaking up on you
School has a funny, funny way of helping you out
Helping you out
