Lesson 10: Opinion Speeches – Constructing
Writing an Opinion Piece Unit Plan - Grade 5 and Grade 6 | Lesson 10 | 60 minutes
A 60 minute lesson in which students will construct an opinion speech using appropriate text structure, language features and devices.
Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Ask the students if they have any final questions about writing their opinion speech, or if they need additional research time.
Teacher Instruction
- Provide the students with a copy of the Opinion Writing Checklist – Structure, Language and Features. Remind the students to apply their knowledge of opinion text structure, language and features when writing their speeches. Encourage them to refer to their checklist frequently throughout the writing process.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Monitor and support the students as they write their opinion speeches. Teachers may wish to set a time limit for writing, or they may allow the students to take as much time as they need to complete the task. Ensure that the students know exactly how much time they have and provide regular reminders of how much time is remaining.
Wrapping Up
- Once the students have finished writing their opinion speeches, encourage them to proofread and edit their work.
- Teachers may wish to collect this piece of writing (once the students have presented their speeches to the class) and use it to assess the students’ understanding of the unit objectives. The Opinion Writing – Assessment Rubric may be a helpful tool for teachers during this process.
Differentiation
Extending Students
- Encourage more capable students to assist others to edit their writing.
Supporting Students
- Allow less confident students to have assistance to edit their writing.
Assessment Strategies
Suggested Assessment Strategies
- used strategic whole class or individual questioning
- observed student participation during learning activities
- recorded student progress on a checklist
- annotated student work samples
- collected and reviewed student work samples
- facilitated whole class or peer feedback sessions
- encouraged student self-reflection
- administered formal assessment tasks.
