Display slide 11. Have the class come to the front of the room for a demonstration. Place the bar magnet in the tray in front of you so the students can see. Place the white paper over the magnet. Gradually sprinkle the iron filings onto the paper. Ensure the distribution of filings allows the students to see magnetic flux lines. Remove the filings and repeat the experiment until the desired effect is reached.
Display slide 12. Distribute theObserving Magnetic Flux Lines Worksheet to individuals or groups. The students will need to complete the investigation into what they observed during the demonstration.
Once the students have completed their worksheets, discuss the observations they had and the conclusions they drew from the demonstration.
Using this demonstration as a basis for investigation, students requiring extension may like to design an experiment on magnetism.
Introduce more complex content such as electromagnetism and have students undertake an inquiry project.
Have students complete the worksheets in a group situation which suits their learning styles.
Display a word wall of suitable terms in the classroom to consolidate the scientific vocabulary in use.
