Display slide 13 and discuss the independent task. Review the five senses with the students and ask them to share some examples of each with the class.
Lead the students on a guided walk around the school. Encourage the students to identify and discuss the built and natural features of the school during the walk. If possible, take photographs of these features during the walk.
Upon returning the classroom, provide each student with a copy of the Nature Walk Senses Worksheet. Monitor and support the students as they independently complete the worksheet. Once the students have finished, encourage confident students to share the senses they experienced on the nature walk.
View the photographs taken throughout the guided walk and ask the students to use a sense to describe each place. Encourage more confident students to describe why this is a special place in your school.
Encourage more capable students to write a description of each place they visited on the guided walk.
Allow students with lower literacy levels to complete the worksheet in a small group, supported by a teacher or teacher aide.
