Read the narrative text, Tom Tom by Rosemary Sullivan, to the class. Alternatively, watch a video reading of the text on YouTube. (Note: This video has some minor reading errors; however, these do not interfere with the authenticity of the text). After reading, ask the students:
What is similar between your life and Tom Tom’s life?
What is different between your life and Tom Tom’s life?
What are some of the places Tom Tom travels to throughout the day?
Ask the students to recall some of the special places that Tom Tom frequents in the book. As a class, create a map of Tom Tom’s community and the places that are special to him.
