Full Day Plan
Mark the roll and record any absences on the Substitute Teaching Day Feedback Form. Identify any students with special educational needs and ensure you are aware of any assistance they may require throughout the day.
Rules and Routines
Establish rules and expectations for the day with the students. Familiarize yourself with the regular routines of the class, as well as any additional activities happening during the day e.g. assembly.
Literacy – Phonics
Revise with the students the following blends, with examples, on the board: ‘bl’, ‘br’, ‘cr’, ‘tr’, ‘sn’, ‘cl’, ‘fr’, ‘sk’. Place the students into small groups and provide each group with the Finger Twist Up – Phonics Game. Monitor and support the students as they play the phonics game in their groups. As an extension, ask the students to record the words in their workbooks.
Literacy – Writing
Display the picture cards from the Sporting Pictures Stories – Sequencing Activity on the board. Sequence the story as a class. Distribute a copy of the Sporting Picture Stories Worksheet to the students. Ask the students to paste the pictures in sequential order in their workbooks, writing a sentence underneath each picture to explain what is happening. Monitor and support the students as they independently complete the task. When the students have finished, encourage volunteers to read their stories to the class.
Numeracy – Time
As a class, revise the months of the year in order. Ask the students to try and use non-verbal communication to line up in order, by birth month, from January to December. Provide each of the students with a copy of the Months of the Year Worksheet – Ordering. Monitor and support the students as they order the months from 1st to 12th. As an extension, ask the students to color the summer months yellow, the fall months red, the winter months blue and the spring months green. When the students have finished, mark the worksheet together as a class.
Numeracy – Addition and Subtraction
Provide each student with a Dinosaur Maths – Addition and Subtraction worksheet. Monitor and support the students as they solve the addition and subtraction problems to color in their dinosaur. When the students have finished, correct the worksheet as a class. If time permits, provide the students with a blank piece of paper and ask the students to create their own addition and subtraction dinosaur.
Literacy – Shared Reading
Choose a picture book to read and share with the students.
Health/P.E. – Health
Play a game of ‘Simon Says’, focusing on the following body parts: ear, stomach, foot, hand, face, leg, elbow, finger, knee, arm, head and toes. Distribute a copy of the Body Labeling Activity to the students. Monitor and support the students as they independently record each body part, then color in the worksheet. When the students have finished, correct the worksheet as a class.
