Fire Prevention Week is held during the month of October, which is also Fire Prevention Month. Each year, teachers and children across the country gather to talk about fire safety in the schools and at home in what is now the nation's longest-running public health observance. The first Fire Prevention Week was held in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Presidential Calvin Coolidge officially declared the first National Fire Prevention Week in proclaimed the first National Fire Prevention Week in 1925.

The theme for Fire Prevention Month in 2022 will be “Fire Won't Wait. Plan Your Escape." This year's theme was chosen by the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) to remind citizens — especially small children — that it's important to plan a home escape plan in case there is ever a fire in the home.
