Use an understanding of place value to determine a number 10 or 100 more or less than a number with this set of clip cards.

Have your student been working on understanding how to use place value skills to mentally add and subtract 10 or 100 to a number? If you are looking for a fun way to have your students review this skill, look no further! Teach Starter has created a set of clip cards for your 2nd-grade students to use when learning how to mentally add and subtract 10 or 100 from a number.

Prior to use, the 24 cards should be cut apart. Clothespins can be provided if used as clip cards. Students will read the phrase on the card and determine which of the 3 choices is correct. Then, they can clip a clothespin to that number, circle their choice, or simply record their choice on the provided recording sheet. Answers can be checked using the answer key that matches the student recording sheet.

This resource is an engaging way to practice calculating 10 or 100 more or less than a given number up to 1,200.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:

### 🆘 Support Struggling Students

To provide additional support, use physical manipulatives or a hundreds chart. Reiterate the patterns in place value that are demonstrated as we add or subtract 10 or 100 from a given number.

### ➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

As an extension, ask students to create phrases that explain the relationship between the number on each card and the incorrect choices on each card. For example, on Card 1, an incorrect choice is 264, so a student might say “10 more than 254.”

### 🛴 Scoot Activity

Place the cards around the room in numerical order and give each student a recording sheet. Assign students or pairs to a starting point card. Give students time to review the card and record their answers in the corresponding space on their paper. Students will rotate to the next card when you say, “SCOOT!” Continue in this manner until students return to their starting point.

### 👋 Exit Ticket

Use these cards as a formative assessment after your lesson. Pick a random assortment of cards and project them on the board for the whole class to see. Students can record their answers on a sheet of paper, sticky note, or their notebook.

## Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students

Print on cardstock for added durability and longevity. Place all pieces in a folder or large envelope for easy access.

Sustainability Tip: Print a few recording sheets on cardstock and slip them into dry-erase sleeves. Students can record their answers with a whiteboard marker, then erase and reuse them.
