Who Was Robert Delaunay? Circle Art Extraordinaire!

To get started, let’s take a look at the artist himself! Robert Delaunay, a prominent French painter, was born in the bustling city of Paris. His artistic journey began with an unusual twist – apprenticing under a theatrical designer for two years. This early exposure to design and visual composition ignited his passion for the arts, setting the stage for his eventual journey into painting.

In 1912, Robert Delaunay began painting using only pure or primary colors. This change led him on a journey that would lead him to create his first abstract works – the iconic ‘Disc’ and ‘Circular Forms.’ This began his unique abstract style that would captivate the art world. His art gained popularity, and his style was later named”Orphism” to describe his vibrant orb-inspired works.

Using Your Delaunay Circles Art Project Templates

To complete your Dot Day Circle art project, do the following.

  1. Introduce students to Delaunay’s works by viewing them and discussing their features. Note that Delaunay used circles, lines and vibrant contrasting colors in his works of art.
  2. For younger students, provide them with the attached templates. Students can use crayons, colored pencils, watercolors, etc., to create their masterpieces.
  3. For older students, provide them with a circle tracing template and ruler. Have students draw their concentric circles on blank paper, then complete their artwork by coloring it.
  4. Once students have completed their artwork, mount them on black construction paper and display them for a fun art gallery effect.
