Teach Embedded Clauses with a Matching Game

Embedded clauses are one of the more abstract grammar concepts, which makes it all the more important to teach them deliberately and explicitly.

An embedded clause is a clause that is placed in the middle of a sentence to add extra information about the subject or object. It is usually separated by commas, such as:

My dog, who loves chasing balls, ran speedily across the park.

The embedded clause in this sentence (who loves chasing balls) provides more information about the subject of the sentence (the dog).

This matching card game has been designed by our team to help your students explore embedded clauses and their role in sentences. The resource includes three types of cards (sentence beginnings, embedded clauses and sentence endings) that students combine to create meaningful sentences. As students match the cards together, they learn how embedded clauses add detail and variety to writing.

The download includes:

  • Instruction page
  • 30 x matching cards
  • Student recording sheet
  • Answer ley

Fun Ways to Teach Clauses Embedded in a Sentence

These matching cards are a versatile resource that can be used to explore clauses embedded in a sentence in a variety of ways. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Mix-and-Match – Encourage students to deliberately create silly or unusual combinations for a light-hearted way to practise grammar while having fun.
  • Team Challenge – Divide the students into small groups, then see which team can correctly match the cards in the fastest time.
  • Memory Game – Add an additional element of interest and challenge to the activity by placing the cards face down to play a game of Memory.

By offering flexible, playful ways to use this resource, student interest and retention are maximized.
