The Facial Expressions and Gestures Activity is the perfect hands-on resource to help students recognise and understand the many ways we communicate without words.
Facial Expressions and Gestures Activity
In this facial expressions and gestures activity, students are presented with a range of images showing gestures and facial expressions. They must identify the nonverbal communication examples in each picture and match them to the words that best describe the action or emotion. This interactive process strengthens students’ understanding of how gestures and facial expressions can convey feelings such as happiness, surprise, anger, confusion, or excitement. As well as understand how language, facial expressions and gestures are used to interact with others.
Facial Expressions Chart for Classroom Learning
Included with this activity is a facial expressions chart, which gives students clear visual references for the correct match up for these images and words. The chart acts as a guide, making it easier for learners to self-mark and understand the facial expressions and gestures provided on each of the flashcards.
Teachers can display the facial expressions chart in the classroom to support ongoing conversations about empathy, communication, and understanding others.
Nonverbal Communication Examples in Action
This activity offers meaningful nonverbal communication examples that students can explore and discuss. By connecting each picture with descriptive words, learners see firsthand how powerful gestures and facial expressions are in daily life. These examples also encourage empathy and emotional literacy, giving students the tools to better interpret and respond to the emotions of others.
