Struggling With Teaching Analogies?

No worries! Our teacher team has put together easy instructions to help you explain the concept to your students.

An analogy shows the relationship between two words and asks you to apply that same relationship to a new pair of words. To solve an analogy, students should follow these steps:

  • Read the first pair of words carefully.
    Ask: How are these two words related? For example: Cat : Kitten means a cat’s baby is called a kitten.
  • Identify the relationship.
    It could be:

    • Synonyms (happy : joyful)
    • Antonyms (hot : cold)
    • Part to whole (petal : flower)
    • Cause and effect (rain : puddle)
    • Category and member (dog : mammal)
    • Sequence or order (day : night)
    • Object and function (broom : sweep)
  • Apply that same relationship to the second pair.
    For example:
    Cat : Kitten :: Dog : ____
    Since a cat’s baby is a kitten, a dog’s baby is a puppy.
