Level 2 Heart Word Teaching Slides (Grade 1)

Our Level 2 Heart Word slides have been created specifically for Grade 1 classrooms that follow a systematic, evidence‑based literacy approach. Each digital lesson walks students’ step‑by‑step through a predictable routine that strengthens their ability to connect phonemes to graphemes—particularly in common words that aren’t fully decodable at this stage.

This pack explores a new collection of essential high‑frequency words encountered frequently in Grade 1 texts. Words in this set include want, give, have, there, their, two, could, would, should, says, done, gone, put, push, again, both, thought, though, other…  ideal for consolidating and extending foundational reading skills.

Heart Word Instruction Aligned with Structured Literacy

Every slide set follows a consistent teaching pathway grounded in the Science of Reading. Students are guided through:

  • Sound Analysis – Tapping and identifying the phonemes in each word to understand which parts are regular and which are not.
  • Spotting the Tricky Element – Highlighting the grapheme(s) with an unexpected sound, accompanied by a simple explanation suitable for young learners.
  • Heart Learning – Marking the irregular part as the section to “learn by heart,” supporting accurate recognition and spelling over time.

This approach encourages deep orthographic mapping, supports decoding and encoding skills, and provides the repetition and clarity required for mastery. Whether used during whole-class instruction, small‑group intervention, or quick review sessions, these slides make teaching Heart Words both manageable and meaningful.
