Use this set of 24 task cards to help your students practise identifying lines of symmetry in 2D shapes.

Lines of Symmetry Identification in Fourth Grade

Combine movement and learning with this active learning indoor game! Students will answer a variety of questions related to identifying lines of symmetry while being able to move around the classroom.

To prepare, print out the 24 task cards and a recording sheet for each student. Display the task cards around the room so that students can practice identifying lines of symmetry on repeat!

To play, students then choose an initial task card, read it, and write their answer on their recording sheets. Once completed, they select a new card and task, until their recording sheet is complete.

Through this activity, students will show their ability to recognise lines of symmetry in a variety of shapes.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your geometry lessons.

In addition to individual student work time, use this symmetry game to enhance learning through math centers, whole class lessons, or homework assignments.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

Walk students through a few examples; Allow students to use a reference page on the steps involved with identifying lines of symmetry.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

After completing their task cards, have students create their own problems; Have students pair up with other students who may need some help; Have students write down if they noticed any patterns related to lines of symmetry.

👋 Exit Ticket

Use these cards as a formative assessment after your lesson. Pick a random assortment of cards and project them on the board for the whole class to see. Students can record their answers on a sheet of paper, sticky note or notebook.

Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students

Use the dropdown icon on the Download button to choose between the PDF or Google Slides version of this resource. A recording sheet and answer key are also included with this download.

Print on cardboard for added durability and longevity. Place all pieces in a folder or large envelope for easy access.

To keep the task cards out of pockets or under desks, punch a hole in the corner of each to place them on a binder ring.

Sustainability Tip: Print a few recording sheets on cardboard and slip them into write-and-wipe sleeves. Students can record their answers with a whiteboard marker, then erase and reuse them.
