Teach Persuasive Essay Structure

Structure is a key component of any text type, but is particularly important when writing a persuasive essay. When students know how to organize their arguments, evidence and explanations in a clear and logical order, their writing becomes more coherent and easier for readers to follow. A well‑structured text also strengthens the overall impact of their message, helping them communicate their viewpoint with confidence and clarity.

This resource has been designed by our team to teach your students the structural components of a persuasive essay using the example text, The School Day Should Start Later. To complete the activity, students will read and cut out paragraphs, then glue each paragraph into the correct section of the scaffold table provided. The table features the following headings:

  • Title
  • Introduction
  • Argument 1
  • Argument 2
  • Argument 3
  • Conclusion

By completing this persuasive sequencing activity, students will learn the key structural components of persuasive essays using an authentic, age-appropriate example.

Use This Persuasive Piece Example in Your Lessons

This persuasive piece example can be used in multiple ways during your ELA lessons. Here are a few simple ideas from our team to get you started:

  • Pre-Reading Predictions – Before handing out the text, show students the table where they will sequence and paste the text. From this table alone, have students predict what type of text they will sort, giving reasons for their predictions.
  • Post-Sort Discussion – Once the students have sorted the text, have them discuss their order with a partner. This process requires students to explain where they placed each paragraph and why, strengthening metacognition skills.
  • Highlighting and Annotating – After sequencing, have students use colored pencils or highlighters to mark language features such as topic sentences, text connectives and evidence.
