No-Prep Science Tool Worksheets to Boost Inquiry Skills

Provide students with meaningful practice in scientific inquiry by challenging them to think like real scientists. This printable set of science tool worksheets for Grades 3–5 helps students decide which tools are best for observing, measuring, and recording data during an investigation. Instead of simply naming tools, students must analyze each experiment scenario and choose the tools that make the most sense for the task.

It’s a great way to boost science inquiry skills and promote purposeful scientific thinking.

Select and Explain How Science Tools are Used

This resource includes eight scenario-based worksheets, each featuring a brief description of a short science experiment. After reading the scenario, students will:

  • Identify which science tools are needed to make and record observations
  • Choose from tools such as digital cameras, video recording, voice recorders, thermometers, rulers, timers, and more
  • Explain how each selected tool would be used
  • Justify why the tool is essential for collecting accurate data

These worksheets are ideal for developing inquiry skills, refining written explanations, and reinforcing the role of tools in scientific investigations.
