Reading Comprehension (Grade 4) for Red Ribbon Week

It happens every year. Red Ribbon Week celebrations are on the horizon, dress-up days have been announced, and the kids are ready to participate! While we love the celebrations and events this year, don’t let those overshadow the real meaning and story behind Red Ribbon Week. What’s it all about? Here’s a quick refresher.

The story of Red Ribbon Week began with a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent named Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. Kiki worked to stop drug trafficking and protect people from the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Sadly, he was killed in the line of duty. In honor of Kiki’s courage and sacrifice, people in his California community started wearing red ribbons. From there, the story spread and grew into the nationwide celebration that we know today.
