World War I for Kids – Reading Comprehension Pack

If you’re looking for resources to teach your students about World War 1, we’ve got you covered.

This collection of reading passages and comprehension questions worksheets is designed to help younger students learn about the history of World War 1. The passages are written at a level that will be accessible to your students, but they still contain enough detail to keep everyone engaged.

The reading passages include questions that allow students to demonstrate their understanding of what they’ve read. These comprehension questions are aligned with common core standards and are written in a way that makes them perfect for use in a classroom setting.

For added flexibility, we have included a Google Slides version of these worksheets!

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

In addition to independent student work time, use this worksheet as an activity for:

For Fast Finishers

  • Students can choose a country that was fighting in WWI and then complete more profound research about their involvement in the war.

For Struggling Readers

  • Break up the passage and answer questions about each subsection as the content is read.
  • Read the passage aloud, breaking it into subsections and discussing/noting key details.
  • Use highlighters to bring attention to keywords and facts needed to understand the concept successfully.

Easily Download & Print

Use the dropdown icon on the Download button to choose between the PDF or Google Slides version of this resource.

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.

To save paper, we suggest printing this 2-page worksheet double-sided.

Additionally, project the worksheet onto a screen and work through it as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks.
