A 60 minute lesson in which students will solve simple word problems involving fractions.
This lesson plan includes the following resources:
Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Play the Pizza Fraction Bingo as a class, using the cards which show the fraction written in words.
Teacher Instruction
- Project the Problem Solving Mat on the board. Write the following word problem: Jane and Bob were having a sleepover. They ordered some pizza. Jane ate ¼ of a pizza. Bob ate ¾ of a pizza. How many pizzas did Jane and Bob eat altogether? Demonstrate to the students how to solve the problem using the problem solving mat. Discuss the answer as a class.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Provide the students with a laminated copy of the problem solving mat used in the previous activity. As a class, complete the first word problem on page 12 of the Fractions Worksheet Pack – Lower Grades. Encourage the students use their problem solving mat. Allow the students to copy their answer and drawing on their worksheet.
- Support the students to complete the second word problem using their problem solving mat. Discuss the answer as a class, then allow the students to then copy their answer and drawing on their worksheet.
- Monitor and support the students to independently complete the remaining problems on page 12, using their problem solving mat as a scaffold.
Wrapping Up
- Discuss the answers of the worksheet with the students. Allow the students to self-correct their worksheets in order to provide them with immediate feedback.
