Lesson Plan
Tuning In
- Revise the content of the unit by playing a game of ‘Fraction Match Up’ using the Fraction Wheels.
Teacher Instruction
- Use slides 12-44 of the Introduction to Fractions PowerPoint to revise halves, quarters, thirds, fifths and eighths. Remind the students of how many pieces form a whole in each fraction.
Guided/Independent Learning
- Cut out the pictures and headings for each fraction in the Unit Fraction Posters. Paste each of the headings on large pieces of paper and display these around the room.
- Provide each student with two or three pictures each. Explain to the students that they need to work out which fraction each of their pictures represents, then attach them to the correct poster.
- Allow the students time to work out where their pictures belong and to attach them to the correct poster. When all the students have finished, discuss each fraction poster.
- Ask the students to open their Fractions Worksheet Pack – Lower Grades. Monitor and support the students to complete pages 10-11 as revision.
Wrapping Up
- Display the posters the students created in the classroom. Discuss any challenges the students experienced when completing the activity.
