Text Connectives (Conjunctive Adverbs) Interactive Activity

Liven up your next grammar lesson with this fun interactive activity teaching students all about conjunctive adverbs.

This activity shows kids that conjunctive adverbs are words that help connect ideas in sentences. They are like special words that show how different parts of a sentence are related. These adverbs are often used to join two independent clauses (complete thoughts) together in a single sentence.

Looking for a quick list of conjunctive adverbs for your students to view? That’s included in this resource, too. Here are some conjunctive adverbs that are easy for kids to understand:

  • accordingly
  • additionally
  • after all
  • as a result
  • besides
  • consequently
  • conversely
  • finally
  • for example

Inside the slide deck you’ll find a conjunctive adverbs list with 27 examples of conjunctive adverbs and adverbial phrases!

This activity also includes 9 fantastic learning experiences for students to complete, from fill-in-the-gaps to editing passages of writing to include conjunctive adverbs (and the required punctuation, the comma!).

Through this activity, students will show their understanding that texts are made cohesive through the use of linking devices and text connectives.
