Solve mathematics investigation about financial mathematics and measurement, embedded in a real-world context.
A Financial Maths Investigation With a Real-World Mini Golf Challenge
This financial mathematics investigation combines measurement, budgeting and design skills in an engaging, real-world task. Students take on the role of mini golf course designers, creating their own backyard mini golf hole while working within a set budget.
As part of the investigation, students must design a mini golf hole that meets specific requirements relating to area, perimeter and shape. They then calculate the materials needed, select equipment and novelty items from a provided catalogue, and develop a financial plan that stays within a $600 budget.
Throughout the task, students apply a range of mathematical skills, including calculating area and perimeter, working with decimals and money, budgeting and financial planning, measuring and estimating quantities, analysing constraints and making decisions and problem-solving in an authentic context.
The open-ended nature of the investigation encourages creativity while allowing students to demonstrate their mathematical understanding in different ways.
Flexible Ways to Use This Financial Maths Investigation
This rich task can be used in a variety of classroom settings:
- Collaborative project – Students work in teams to design and budget a mini golf hole.
- Independent investigation – Allow students to complete the task independently over multiple lessons.
- Extension activity – Challenge students to incorporate additional materials, features or design constraints.
- STEM connection – Explore links between maths, design and engineering.
Because there are multiple possible solutions, the investigation provides excellent opportunities for discussion, reasoning and mathematical justification.
