Finger Counting – Early Stages of Mathematical Learning

Finger counting is an invaluable tool in the early stages of mathematical learning, offering numerous cognitive, educational, and developmental benefits. One of the primary advantages is that it provides tangible, physical interaction with numbers, making abstract concepts more concrete for young learners. This tactile feedback is crucial for memory retention and understanding. Finger counting also aids in the development of fine motor skills, promoting the coordination between the brain and hand movements, which is essential for overall cognitive development.

While moving beyond finger counting is crucial for cognitive growth and moving beyond concrete representations, in the early stages of counting their an invaluable tool.

This set of posters has been designed and created by a teacher to assist children in the beginning stages of counting to 10.

Counting Posters to Display in the Classroom

When deciding where to display these posters there are a few things to think about in terms of strategic placement Here are some of those points:

  • Place posters at the eye level of the children to ensure they can easily see and engage with them.
  • Position them in key areas where students spend a lot of time, such as near the whiteboard, reading corners, or activity stations.
  • Include posters in interactive areas, like maths corners or near manipulatives, where students can refer to them during hands-on activities.
