Promote Belonging with an Inclusive Language Poster

As teachers, we aim to foster a classroom environment where all students feel seen, valued and respected. This starts with the words we use, and the words we encourage our students to use!

This simple but effective inclusive language poster has been created by our team to support you in encouraging the use of inclusive language in your classroom. It provides an age-appropriate definition of inclusive language as well as some examples to help your students understand the concept. From replacing gendered terms with neutral alternatives to using people-first language, the poster models how small changes in speech can make a big difference in how others feel. It’s a visual reminder that reinforces positive behaviour, encourages empathy, and helps build a respectful classroom community.

This resource is available as a PDF or editable Google Slides file. You can access and print either a full-colour or black-and-white version, depending on your needs.

Flexible Ways to Use This Inclusive Language Resource

This inclusive language classroom resource is more than just a poster! It’s a versatile teaching tool that can be used in multiple ways to support your curriculum and classroom culture. Here are some ideas from our team to get you started:

  • Lesson Stimulus – Use the poster as a springboard for a lesson about inclusive language and why it is important. Review the examples on the poster, then have students brainstorm examples to add to this list.
  • Classroom Display – Use the poster as the centre feature in a classroom display on inclusive language. This serves as a visible reminder to students to use respectful language at all times.
  • Reflection Tool – Use the poster as a guidance tool during restorative conversations. This helps students understand the impact of their words and how to make better choices in the future.
