Practise Positive and Negative Numbers with a Board Game!

Are you looking for a fun activity to help your students review integers, word problems and plot integers? You have landed in the right place! Teach Starter has created a board game your year 6 students can use when reviewing positive and negative numbers.

To play:

  1. Begin by having each player select a game piece and place it at the starting line.
  2. The person with the longest first name goes first.
  3. Player 1 should spin the spinner and move forward the appropriate number of spaces.
  4. If you land on a space that has a picture of a space symbol, draw a card and answer the problem. The next player in line should check the answer key to see if the answer is correct.
  5. If the player is correct, they may stay in their space. If the player is incorrect, they must return to the previous space they were at before taking a turn.

The first person to the finish line wins!

Through this activity, students will review how to find the opposites of integers, interpret word problems, and plot integers.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your maths lessons.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

If there are students who need additional support, consider providing a positive and negative number line to help them identify opposites.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

For students who need an additional challenge, encourage them to create their own game cards to add to the game.

Make sure to check out additional resources that cover positive and negative numbers!
