Make Preposition Phrases Practice Simple and Engaging

Teaching preposition phrases doesn’t have to be a challenge… All you need is the right resources!

This set of 20 preposition phrase task cards has been designed by our team to help your students strengthen their understanding of preposition phrases and how they are used to enrich sentences. Each card asks students to either:

  • Identify the prepositional phrase in the sentence on the card, or
  • Write a sentence using the prepositional phrase on the card.

By working through these tasks, students build confidence in recognising and using prepositional phrases in their writing. This resource downloads as a black-and-white PDF or editable Google Slides file. It contains:

  • Instruction page
  • 20 task cards
  • Student recording sheet
  • Answer sheet

Read on to learn more about how to use this resource in your grammar lessons.

Multiple Uses for This Set of Preposition Phrase Questions

This resource offers multiple ways to incorporate preposition phrase practice into your lessons. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Scavenger Hunt – Do you have a particularly active class? Get your students up and moving by using the task cards as a scavenger hunt activity. Hide the cards around the classroom or playground. Have students work in pairs to search for the cards, complete the task, then move on to find another. You could add a competitive element to the game by challenging students to find and complete the most cards within a certain time period.
  • Relay Race – Another great activity for particularly active students! Divide your class into two teams and the pile of task cards at the front of the room. On your signal, one player from each team runs and grabs a card, completes the task, then brings it to the teacher (or a designated checker). If correct, they tag the next teammate to do the same. The first team to correctly complete a set number of cards wins!
  • Preposition Phrase Charades – Divide the class into two teams. Choose a volunteer from the first team to be the actor. This student chooses a prepositional phrase task card, then acts out the sentence or phrase without speaking. Members of their team must try to guess the sentence or phrase in order to earn points for their team.

With so many ways to use these task cards, they’re a versatile addition to any grammar lesson on prepositional phrases!
