Promote student self-assessment of reading skills with a R.E.A.L. Reading Self-Assessment Rubric.

Student Self Assessment Creates R.E.A.L. Readers!

Student self-assessment is a great way to inspire students to become better readers. When students assess their reading, they become more involved in their learning and better understand what they’re good at and what they need to work on. It also enables them to set goals, keep track of how they’re doing, and take control of their learning. Self-assessment allows children to better think about what they read and manage their understanding. It also teaches them to keep pushing, even when things are tough, and to be proud of what they’ve learned.

Try Out a R.E.A.L. Reader Self-Assessment Rubric

This printable resource is the perfect self-assessment tool for students to use when working on developing and improving their independent reading skills. It uses the handy mnemonic – R.E.A.L. to help students identify their areas of improvement in the following areas:

  • Rate – Reading fluency (words per minute)
  • Expression – Use of expression when reading
  • Accuracy – Percent of text read without errors
  • Learning – Overall comprehension of text

This rubric describes the skills needed to become proficient readers and allows students to rate themselves on their reading skill development. It makes the perfect self-assessment tool and can be an excellent way to kick off individual student reading conferences.
