Teach your students how to divide a whole number by a fraction and divide a fraction by a whole number with this teaching presentation and accompanying student notes.

Learn How to Divide Fractions 

This activity is intended to be used as a teaching presentation and corresponding notes to introduce and practise modelling the division of unit fractions and whole numbers.

The slide deck has 17 total slides, 3 pages of notes with fill-in-the-blank portions, and a completed version of the notes.

The teacher can advance through the slides and use the ‘Speaker Notes’ to supplement their instruction. Students will follow along using the clip-art icons to know when to write, when to simply read and think, and when to discuss with their classmates. Students have a notes page that follows along with the slideshow to improve engagement and provide a resource for students to reference throughout the unit.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts: 

🆘 Support Struggling Students

For students needing additional support, provide the completed notes as a reference. Also, in the ‘practise’ portion, you can start their models for them, so they don’t have to draw the entire model on their own.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

To provide a challenge, describe a scenario involving division of unit fractions and whole numbers and ask students to write the corresponding equation that could be used to solve. For example, tell students, ‘I want to read 1/2 of my book over the next 3 days. If I read the same amount each day, what fraction of the book should I read each day?’ Then, tell the students your book has 120 pages total and see if they can determine the number of pages read each day as well.
