Support Year 2 multiplication learning with this hands-on work mat and prompt card resource, designed to help students explore multiplication concepts using a variety of proven strategies.
Year 2 Multiplication Practice Through Multiple Representations
Developing a strong understanding of multiplication in Year 2 involves more than memorising facts. Students need opportunities to represent multiplication in different ways so they can build deeper understanding and make mathematical connections.
This Year 2 multiplication resource helps students practise multiplication using equal groups, repeated addition, skip counting, arrays and fact families. Students choose a prompt card, then complete the work mat to represent the multiplication fact using multiple strategies, encouraging deeper thinking and reasoning.
The resource includes multiplication work mats and prompt cards featuring multiplication equations, skip-counting sequences, repeated addition tasks and fact family challenges. As students complete the activities, they build fluency while strengthening their understanding of how multiplication concepts connect.
Ideal for reinforcement, intervention and differentiated instruction, this resource helps students develop confidence with early multiplication concepts in an engaging and meaningful way.
Multiplication Activity Ideas for Engaged Learning
This multiplication activity offers plenty of flexibility beyond traditional worksheet practice. Use it to encourage collaboration, mathematical discussion and hands-on exploration while reinforcing key multiplication concepts.
- Multiplication Detective Challenge: Provide students with a completed work mat and have them work backwards to identify the original multiplication fact. Students must use clues from the arrays, skip counting and repeated addition representations to solve the mystery.
- Maths Gallery Walk: Have students complete different task cards and display their finished work mats around the classroom. Students walk around the room, comparing strategies and discussing the different ways multiplication facts can be represented.
- Build-and-Prove Stations: Set up maths stations with counters, blocks or other manipulatives. Students complete a work mat and then physically build the equal groups or arrays to prove their answers, creating a strong link between concrete and pictorial understanding.
