Multiplication and Division Word Problem Sorting Activity
Knowing whether to use multiplication or division is an important step in developing problem-solving confidence. This engaging multiplication and division word problem activity encourages students to analyse real-world situations, determine the correct operation and justify their mathematical thinking.
Students work through 24 task cards featuring a variety of multiplication and division scenarios. Before solving each problem, they sort the cards into the correct category on the included sorting mat. Students then record whether the problem uses multiplication or division and calculate the answer on the accompanying recording sheet.
By focusing on operation selection before calculation, this resource helps students build a deeper understanding of multiplicative thinking while strengthening problem-solving and reasoning skills. An answer key is included to support quick and easy marking.
Flexible Ways to Use This Multiplication and Division Word Problem Activity
This resource can be used in a variety of classroom settings:
