Multiplication and Division Word Problems for 3rd Grade

Understanding when to use multiplication and when to use division is an essential problem-solving skill. This engaging multiplication and division word problem activity helps students analyze real-world scenarios, identify the correct operation, and apply their mathematical reasoning to solve each problem.

Students work through 24 task cards featuring a variety of multiplication and division situations. Before solving, they sort each card onto the correct section of the sorting mat. Students then record whether the problem requires multiplication or division and solve it using the included recording sheet.

By focusing on operation selection before computation, students develop a stronger understanding of multiplication and division concepts while building confidence with word problems. An answer key is included to support quick and easy grading.

Flexible Ways to Use These Multiplication and Division Word Problems

This resource can be used in a variety of classroom settings:

  • Math Centers – Add the task cards to a math station for collaborative problem-solving practice.
  • Partner Work – Have students justify why each problem belongs in the multiplication or division category before solving.
  • Intervention and Review – Provide extra support for students who need practice identifying multiplication and division situations.
