Learn How to Fold an Origami Bird

Origami can be a fantastic tool to use in the classroom! It offers many benefits to students, such as:

  • Process Skills – Following origami instructions provides students with the opportunity to learn and practise how to follow a step-by-step process.
  • Creativity – Origami allows for creative expression as students can experiment with different paper colours and create unique designs.
  • Relaxation and Stress Reduction – Engaging in origami can serve as a calming activity, giving students a break from the academic curriculum.

In addition to this, it is great fun, too!

This origami video will teach your students how to make a simple origami bird. We recommend that you use this video in conjunction with our set of printable instructions that will guide your students through the paper-folding process. You’ll also need small pieces of coloured paper and a crayon or black marker so your students can add eyes and other distinguishing features to their origami bird.

This origami bird activity will benefit your students by promoting fine motor skills, enhancing spatial awareness, fostering creativity and providing a hands-on and engaging approach to learning.

Don’t Let These Origami Birds Fly Away Too Quickly!

Once your students have created their origami birds, don’t let them fly away too quickly! There are many ways to incorporate these paper creations into your classroom. Check out these suggestions from our teacher team:

  1. Measurement in Maths – Explore maths concepts with your students, having them measure and compare the sizes of their origami birds. Discuss terms like length, wingspan and height.
  2. Birdsong in Music – Have your students investigate the sounds made by particular species of birds. Have students perform these alongside their origami birds, creating a multi-sensory and interactive experience.
  3. Migration Routes in Geography – Discuss bird migration and the routes different bird species take. These could be plotted on a world map with the origami birds accompanying the display.
