Expand Those Numbers – Three-Digit Break Apart Strategy Worksheet

This set of two worksheets focuses on the break-apart strategy, using place value expansion to help students solve addition problems involving three-digit numbers. By expanding the numbers into their place value components, students gain a stronger grasp of addition concepts and develop proficiency in using the split strategy.

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

In addition to individual student work time, use this worksheet as a:

  • Math group
  • lesson exit ticket
  • early finisher activity
  • homework assignment
  • whole-class review (via smartboard)

For early finishers, have more three-digit addition problems on the board and encourage them to use the break-apart strategy to solve these in their math spirals.

For students who may find this tricky, give them math manipulatives to use to solve these addition problems. Alternatively, begin by using the split strategy with two-digit numbers.

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.

To save paper, we suggest printing this 2-page worksheet double-sided.

Turn this teaching resource into a sustainable activity by printing on cardboard and slipping it into a write-and-wipe sleeve. Students can record their answers with a whiteboard marker, then erase and reuse.

Additionally, project the worksheet onto a screen and work through it as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks.
