Asking Testable Questions Activity Pack

Support your students as they move beyond simple observations and begin asking strong, investigative questions. Designed for upper elementary and middle school learners, this resource helps students practice turning what they see into questions that can be tested, measured, and explored through investigation.

This Asking Investigable Questions Activity Pack is ideal for developing inquiry skills at the beginning of the year or before launching independent science investigations.

View Cause and Effect Relationships & Ask Scientific Questions

Students will examine a set of real-world images showing cause-and-effect relationships in nature, such as:

  • Flooding and erosion
  • Animals using camouflage
  • Changes to land 
  • Environmental interactions and issues

Using the task cards, students will write their own investigable questions based on each picture shown. The image prompts encourage students to learn the difference between interesting questions and testable ones.

This pack includes:

  • 24 image-based task cards
  • A student recording sheet for writing questions
  • Suggested answers to support teacher modelling and discussion
