Take your students on a book hunt with this poster and set of task cards.

We’re Going on a Book Hunt!

If there’s one thing that kids love, it’s solving a puzzle!

This illustrated image contains characters from 23 different children’s novels, fairy tales and nursery rhymes. Your students must try and find them all!

Some of the much-loved children’s characters included in this resource are:

  • Harry Potter
  • Humpty Dumpty
  • Charlotte (from Charlotte’s Web)
  • Jack (from Jack and the Beanstalk)
  • Aslan (from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe)
  • And many more!

Using This Book Hunt Activity

  1. Print out the task cards (pages 2-5) on cardstock and cut them out.
  2. Project the book hunt image (page 1 of the download) on your whiteboard or screen.
  3. Choose a task card and read it to the class. Students look for the children’s book element that was referenced in the task card in the image. When they have found it, have them come to the board to point it out to the rest of the class.
  4. Alternatively, print the image on cardstock and slip it inside a dry-erase sleeve. Place the image and the task cards inside your reading center and have students circle each item when they have found it using a dry-erase marker. They can wipe clean when they are done.

Why not turn the activity into a competition? Place your students in groups and provide them with a copy of the image. The first group to name all 23 characters is the winner!
