Familiarize your students with a variety of consonant digraphs with these hands-on word puzzles.

Blend Phonemes to Build Words with Consonant Digraphs

A digraph is a two-letter combination that creates one sound. The English language consists of both consonant digraphs and vowel digraphs. Consonant digraphs can be found at the beginning or the end of a word (or anywhere in between), depending on the sound they make. Some examples of consonant digraphs include ck, ch, th, sh, ph, wh.

This set of word puzzles has been designed to help your students become more familiar with consonant digraphs in monosyllabic words. The resource includes 16 puzzle cards and a set of instructions. Each puzzle card displays a picture and a word (containing a consonant digraph) that has been segmented according to its phonemes.

How to Use This Hands-On Phonics Resource

  1. Print and cut out the word puzzles. Cardstock is recommended.
  2. Provide students with the puzzle pieces.
  3. Students find all the puzzle pieces with the same picture, then place the pieces in the correct order to build the word.
  4. Students check that the word is spelled correctly by checking that the picture on the puzzle is correctly formed.

Green letters are consonant digraphs that need to be placed at each word’s beginning or end.
