Looking for a Direct and Indirect Speech Worksheet Pack?

When it comes to direct and indirect speech, students need to understand that direct speech uses a speaker’s exact words, while indirect speech reports those words without quotation marks. Common misconceptions include forgetting to remove quotation marks when converting to indirect speech, changing pronouns incorrectly or struggling to maintain the meaning of the original statement during the conversion process. That’s why explicit teaching and repeated practice are so important!

This direct and indirect speech worksheet pack provides multiple opportunities for meaningful practice with this key grammar skill. Through a variety of structured activities, students will learn how to recognize and convert between direct and indirect speech with confidence.

There are seven different worksheets featured in this pack. Some of the activities include:

  • Color coding the direct and indirect speech
  • Converting from direct to indirect speech, and vice versa
  • Identifying direct and indirect speech in short passages of text
  • Analyzing direct or indirect speech is used in particular text types

This resource downloads as a black-and-white PDF or editable Google Slides file. The download also includes an answer key to make grading the worksheets fast and easy.

A Direct Speech and Indirect Speech Worksheet Pack to Engage All Learners

Keeping students engaged during grammar lessons can sometimes be a challenge, particularly when they are learning concepts that require careful attention to sentence structure and punctuation. This direct and indirect speech worksheet pack includes a variety of task types designed to maintain interest while supporting differentiation. Here’s how:

  • Simple conversion activities allow less-confident students to focus on the core skill of changing direct speech into indirect speech and vice versa.
  • Progressive difficulty levels help students build confidence as they transition from sentence-based tasks to more complex, text-based examples.
  • Varied examples and contexts keep students focused and prevent the repetitive feeling that can sometimes occur during grammar lessons.
