Making Connections to Literary Texts Worksheets

Support your 1st Grade and 2nd Grade learners as they explore a range of short literary texts and practise making text‑to‑self, text‑to‑text, and text‑to‑world connections. This pack includes relatable stories such as Singing on Stage, A Special Birthday, Lila’s First Day, Seed to Sunflower, Beach Treasures, The Lost Puppy, Library Day, and The Missing Hat.

Each passage is written with early‑years vocabulary and clear emotional or real‑world moments, making it easy for students to connect personally with the characters and events.

After reading, students complete a structured response sheet where they identify the type of connection, draw their idea, and finish prompts like “In the story when…” and “It reminded me of…”. This repeated practice helps young readers build comprehension, empathy, and confidence as they learn to think beyond the text.

How to Teach Text Connections to Young Students

Making connections is a powerful comprehension strategy that helps students understand stories more deeply. These worksheets break the process into simple, child‑friendly steps that show learners how to relate the text to their own lives, other stories they’ve read, or real‑world experiences.

The short passages provide strong anchor points for discussion — from Ashley feeling proud after singing on stage to Samuel collecting beach treasures with his family. These familiar moments help students recognise emotions, settings, and experiences they can connect with.

Teachers can model thinking aloud, share personal connections, and guide students to explain why a story reminds them of something they know.
