Practice How to Multiply Fractions with an Interactive Activity!

Many students in math class often ask, “When will I ever use this again?” There are many instances where students will need to know how to multiply fractions in various situations, including cooking and baking, construction, engineering, and financial calculations.

Since this skill is important for everyday situations, it is important for students to have ample practice with multiplying fractions. Teach Starter has created an interactive activity that is sure to keep your students engaged and learning simultaneously.

Students follow the on-screen directions to complete a variety of activity types, such as drag and drop and color by number. 

This resource aims to practice multiplying fractions by fractions and the integrated prerequisite skills involved, such as converting improper and mixed fractions.

In addition to individual student work time, use this activity to enhance learning through guided math groups, whole class lessons, or remote learning assignments. 

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, we have a few suggestions for keeping students on track with these concepts: 

🆘 Support Struggling Students

For students needing support, allow the use of fraction manipulatives, calculators, and multiplication charts. Students could work with a peer to provide opportunities to help each other and discuss strategies.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

For students needing a challenge, ask them to write 3 word stories that would require multiplication of a fraction by a fraction to solve. Another idea would be to ask students to create equations that have various products such as “write a fraction multiplication equation where the product does not need to be simplified” or “write a fraction multiplication equation where the product is between one-half and three-fourths.”

🧑‍🏫 Group Learning

Project the slides onto a screen and work through them as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks or mini whiteboards.
