Explore Point of View in Narration with a Mini Book
Understanding point of view in a narrative is an essential skill for developing readers. It helps them recognize who is telling the story and how that shapes what they know about the characters and their experiences.
Teach Starter has created this 8-page mini book to guide students through the process of identifying and analyzing narrative point of view in a story they have recently read. Each page features a different prompt or activity, as outlined below:
- A title page
- Book information
- Point of view
- Text evidence
- What the reader knows
- Point of view and characters
- Point of view and events
- Rewrite the scene
This resource provides a hands-on, interactive way for students to explore point of view in narration. As they complete the mini book, they will learn about the key elements of narrative voice, including the perspective of the storyteller, how much information the narrator shares, and how that impacts the reader’s understanding.
More Narrative Point of View Activities for the Classroom
This resource provides a clear and structured introduction into narrative point of view, making it a great springboard for delving deeper into this key literacy concept. If you’re keen to take your students’ learning even further, consider these ideas:
- Point of View Detective – During shared or individual reading, have students note textual clues that show which point of view the story is being told from.
- Compare and Contrast – Read two short texts written in different points of view, then create a Venn diagram to compare how narrative voice changes the reader’s experience of each story.
- Creative Rewrite – After reading a passage of text written in a particular narrative voice, have students rewrite the passage in a different narrative voice. For example, students might rewrite a first person narration passage as a third person narration.
