Learn About Root Words and Word Families with This Flower Craft

In this activity, students will explore the concept of root words and word families and discover the power of grammatical morphemes. By recognizing and using these morphemes, they’ll create a stunning flower craft that showcases their understanding of word families.

Instructions

  • Decorate and cut out the flower, stem, leaves, and words.
  • Read the morpheme-changed words and glue them onto the petals around the base word.
  • Glue the stem, flower, and leaves onto a card to complete your family flower craft!

Grammatical Morphemes and Word Families

This craft is specifically designed to support the recognition and use of grammatical morphemes to create word families. By exploring word families, students will develop a deeper understanding of how morphemes can be used to create new words, laying the foundation for more advanced concepts like prefixes and suffixes.

In this activity, students will examine words like “play” and discover the different endings that can be added to create new words, such as -s, -ing, -ed, and more. This is the starting point for understanding more complex concepts like base words, prefixes, and suffixes.
