Teach Fire Safety with a Fire Drill Social Story

Preparing young children for fire drills can sometimes feel daunting, but it doesn’t have to be that way! Explain the fire drill process in a clear, calm and engaging way with a fire drill social story from the Teach Starter team.

Using a social story is a highly effective method of teaching your students about fire drills. Social stories are simple, illustrated narratives that help kids understand what to expect and how to respond in specific situations—like a fire drill!  By reading along, students learn each step—from lining up quietly to exiting safely—while strengthening their reading skills. Teachers can feel confident knowing the resource reduces fear, builds a sense of routine and helps children approach fire drills with confidence.

This printable fire drill social story is designed for early readers and works as both a literacy activity and a fire safety lesson.

Make Learning Fire Drill Rules Memorable for Your Students

One of the biggest challenges during fire drills is making sure students remember the rules when they are feeling emotionally heightened. This fire drill social story can be used in multiple ways to reinforce your school’s fire drill rules before a practice drill takes place. Here are some suggestions from our team for you to consider:

  • Morning read-aloud – Use the story during morning circle time on the day of an upcoming fire drill.
  • Small group discussion – Have students read the story in small groups, pausing to talk through each step.
  • Visual reminders – Keep a printed copy of the fire drill social story in the classroom so students can revisit the rules independently.
  • Role-play practice – After reading, encourage students to act out the story to reinforce what they’ve learned about the school’s fire drill rules.

With these approaches, students not only remember the rules but also feel reassured and prepared when the alarm sounds.
