There comes a point when you’ve built up your foundational language skills enough that the act of reading becomes fluid. You spend less time actually sounding out words (like you practiced when building phonological awareness) because your vocabulary grew each time you were presented with a new word.

With our Sight Words Bingo Game, students will have a blast learning sight words while building easily recognized vocabulary words they will soon be able to write.

NOTE: This resource uses words 101-200 found on the Fry Sight Word List. You can find this game for words 1-100 here.

Have Fun Learning Sight Words with Our Sight Words Bingo Game!

This game was designed to get your entire classroom excited to start their sight words practice.

Materials needed:

• Bingo card for each student
• 16 counters (Bingo chips) for each student
• Sight word calling cards
• Teacher Recording Sheet in a dry-erase sleeve (optional for reuse)
• Dry-erase marker (optional for reuse)

Each student will get their own Bingo card and 16 counters to keep track of drawn words. To play, pull a sight word calling card from the bag and read it out loud to the students. Circle the word on the dry erase recording sheet to show it has been used. Students cover the word with a counter if it appears on their Bingo card. Remind students to call out “BINGO!” when they have covered 4 sight words in a row on their card. Then have the students read each sight word on their card as you check that each one is circled on the Teacher Recording Sheet.

Take sight words practice even further with additional activities to help familiarize your students with sight words.

Black Out Bingo

Instead of 4 in a row, students can work to cover all 16 sight words on their cards before calling out “BINGO”.

Charades

Ditch the game boards and use the calling cards as charades prompts. Divide your class or small group into 2 teams. Teams will take turns sending up 1 student to act out the sight word on the card for their team while you keep score and hand the cards to the players. If after 30 seconds their team guesses the correct word they get 1 point. Once every student has had their turn to act out a card, the game is over and the group with the highest points wins.

Draw It! Warm-Up/Exit Game

This activity can also be used as a formative assessment. Pick a random assortment of calling cards and project them on the board for the whole class to see. Have each student pick 3 words and write them on a separate sheet of paper. Then, have the students draw a picture for each word, showing they’ve read the word and understand what it is.

Change the Difficulty Level if Needed

If you have students who are not quite up to speed on their sight words, allow students to hear the sight word as well as view the calling card to read the word and match it to their boards.

You can also pair up students to play together so that their teammates can help find matching words on the board.

Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students

Print this game on cardstock for added durability and longevity.

Once you’ve printed the bingo and calling cards, cut them out along the lines and store them in a folder or envelope. Place the Teacher Recording Sheet into a dry-erase sleeve so that it can be used multiple times.
