How to Teach Recount Writing to Foundation Students

Help students understand that recount writing is simply telling others about something they did. These slides break the process into three easy steps: Think, Write, Draw. Students practise thinking about what happened, choosing a simple sentence starter, and drawing a quick picture to match their writing.

Interactive “This or That” slides (ice cream or cake, crafts or blocks, swings or slides) help students warm up, move their bodies and start thinking about personal experiences they can write about.

With guided modelling and repeated examples, Foundation students build confidence, oral language skills and early writing fluency.

Simple steps for modelling:

• Think — talk about what happened (weekend, playtime, outside, sports).
• Write — choose a sentence starter like “Over the weekend I…” or “During playtime I…” and add a simple action.
• Draw — sketch a quick picture to match the sentence.
• Share — encourage students to retell their recount to a partner.
